I'll never forget the experience of being the only person in my masters-level leadership and ethics course who advocated top-down accountability. Having run my own successful small business for years, I was shocked to hear everyone from the course professors to my fellow classmates decrying the need for accountability. One student even loudly proclaimed, "What does it matter?" Many of these people were already working in the corporate sector in key positions, and some would go on to become consultants to various industries.
