Review : The Missiing Tools
I took the Steve Kaplan "Comedy Intensive" seminar in Los Angeles. I have an MA from one of the top university departments of Theater, Film & Television. I wish I had learned the "Kaplan Stuff" when I was a student. For aspiring (or veteran) comedy writers it's the "Right Stuff." In his classes, and more important in his book, Steve uses his years of experience as a comedy producer, director and teacher to show students [readers] how to cut to the core and to the chase, and to eliminate non-essential, non-funny, and counterproductive elements while you learn to develop a solid core of comedy in your script based on that elusive element "the truth." He'll keep you away from looking for stuff that "might be funny . . ." and help you find solid, believable elements that propel the story and the comic energy almost by themselves. His concept that he has called "straight line vs. wavy line" is the best guide for contrasting comic characters and focusing their comic energy I have yet found...
